Amargosa Borax Works
Borax was found at this location in 1882, and by 1884 William Coleman had purchased the property, organized the Meridian Borax Mining Co., and completed the Amargosa Borax Works. This property was worked during the summer months when temperatures were too high at the Harmony Borax Works, causing the water used in production to be too warm for borax crystallization. A settlement called Amargosa was built to house employees. Here is where the 20-Mule Team was first envisioned, transporting borax to the railroad at Daggett. New borax discoveries later in the decade led to the closure of both Harmony and Amargosa in 1888. Decaying adobe ruins mark the site of Amargosa astride State Route 127.
