Harrisburg
(Aguereberry Camp)

While on their way to Ballarat for Independence Day 1905, Frank 'Shorty' Harris and Jean Pierre 'Pete' Aguereberry found gold ore at what would soon become the Eureka and Cashier mines. Harris let word of their discovery slip, and by September a tent camp of 300 - first called Harrisberry, then Harrisburg - came into being on the flat north of the mines. Harrisburg was short lived, as new finds at Skidoo in 1906 quickly lured miners away; even Harris himself moved on. Aguereberry assumed full ownership of both mines, and continued to live and work at his camp until his death in 1945. Family continued to maintain and occasionally occupy the camp until the 1970s before it was taken over by the National Park Service.
