Shermantown

During the mid-1870s, Panamint City boomed high in the eponymous Panamint Range, reaching a population of 2000. In the valley below, the Los Angeles & Independence Railroad was planned to connect the new town to Los Angeles, and a new townsite was laid out at the envisioned terminus by William Sherman's Panamint Mining & Concentration Works. Called Shermantown, the new townsite included a railroad depot and mill connected to Panamint City by way of an aerial tram. The mines at Panamint City ceased to produce within the next few years, however, and the grandiose plans never materialized; Shermantown thus never existed as more than a simple stage station.
