Castle Cliff
Castle Cliff is a prominent outcrop of the Beaver Dam Mountains standing high above Old Highway 91. After Highway 91 was first designated in 1926, the four Lowe siblings - Susannah Dodge (a widow), Cecil, John, and Marjorie - originally of South Africa then Idaho, homesteaded at Castle Cliff and built a new service station along the highway. They sold gasoline, soft drinks, and food, but their largest commodity was water for the climb over Utah Hill - and everything they sold was at a high premium. They also built two cabins across the highway, and on occasion rented them out.
Susannah died in 1949, followed by Cecil in 1964. That year the remaining siblings, themselves in advanced age, placed the service station up for sale and retired. It isn't known if this is when the service station finally closed, but at some point the inevitable loss of business due to the new Interstate 15 cemented its obsolescence. It was ultimately torn down, and little more than a wide spot in the road marks the location.
